Straddling the line between voyeurism and active participation, the artwork of Phil Collins often engages with how subcultures within local communities relate to and interact with the larger community. As the AAM's 2008 Distinguished Artist in Residence, Collins produced a 16mm color film entitled soy mi madre. Beyond Collins's experiences of Aspen and the surrounding Roaring Fork Valley, soy mi madre took as its references the world of the Latin American telenovela, as well as plot elements of Jean Genet's controversial 1949 play "The Maids", in which the servants of a well-to-do mistress take turns enacting a fantasy drama in which each alternately play the role of their employer. Shot with a Mexican cast and crew entirely on a set in Mexico, soy mi madre debuted at the AAM in 2008. This is a still from that film.
